Fair Housing: Enhancing Housing Quality; Cost of Substandard Housing
Greensboro’s Rental Certification program enhances housing quality. For the full study by UNC graduate student Carol Hickey, click here. In NC in 2006, substandard housing resulted in costs of almost $95 million for children’s health care and related expenses. For the full study by Dr. David Chenoweth, click here. Addressing substandard housing furthers fair housing because it reduces the disparities in housing conditions for minorities and immigrants; for GHC’s Fair Housing report, click here.

Check it out! GHC has a HEPA vacuum for you to borrow!
Whether you are a homeowner or rental property owner, contractor or home repair volunteer, when you paint or renovate an older home you are likely to encounter old lead paint and release lead dust. To work lead safe and clean, most of the supplies are inexpensive–duct tape, plastic, masks. But the lead-dust HEPA vacuum is essential, so call GHC at 691-9521 to borrow ours–like checking a book out of a library. Watch the video link in DON’T SPREAD LEAD and read the booklet.
Action Plan 2008 created by participants at Housing Summit

Despite the “wintry mix” outside, 175 wonderful people gathered for “Welcome HOME for the Greensboro Bicentennial,” the 2008 Housing Summit. After hearing from Martha Are (NC Homeless Policy Specialist) that it costs a community more to leave homeless people on the street than to provide them with subsidized housing and supportive services, seeing the Healthy Homes bus video, and hearing from N.C. and national housing advocates about legislative issues, participants discussed what they will do in 2008.
Much of what each participant heard confirmed what they knew from previous experience, but new information surprised them — and almost everyone plans to take action. Action Plan 2008 outlines where Greensboro will be at the end of 2008 — and read the Greensboro Advocates’ Guide to Fair, Safe, and Affordable Housing to see where we are at the beginning of 2008.
YOU will be a part of making this plan happen. Find your niche, reach out to stakeholders that you know, take action, and email your progress to Beth, so that we can post updates all year long!
